A Professional Development Workshop Focused on Behavior Change with Youth & Adults

This workshop will introduce practitioners (counselors, teachers, case managers, administrators, health care or other human service providers) to the spirit of Motivational Interviewing and begin to develop the core conversation skills of open-ended questions, affirmation, reflections and summaries in a fun and interactive manner. Participant will leave with an understanding of the overall spirit (interpersonal way of being) of Motivational Interviewing and the skills to help their students, clients, patients, or charges better able to address behaviors that interfere with their performance, wellbeing or future success. This session will begin to develop conversational skills that focus on guiding the conversation toward their intrinsic motivations to help develop commitment and action toward positive behavior change. Time will be spent introducing the four processes used in MI and practicing skills and strategies including accurate empathic reflections in an engaging way using video clips, activities, demonstrations and practice.

Motivational Interviewing (Ml) helps people decide to change behaviors leading to a better or more successful future.  Ml is an evidence-based behavior change approach that involves a nonjudgmental way of working with individuals that draws motivation from within through conversation. Ml is collaborative rather than prescriptive, honoring the person’s autonomy and self-direction rather than providing advice. For over ten years the Center for College Access & Success has introduced the use of Ml to help get students back on track or as a restorative discipline practice, including as an alternative to in-school suspension. Facilitated by Richard Rutschman, EdD. Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. 4 CPDU/CEUs
